We review The Golden Fleece Hotel, Gawler, 5118.

Location: The Golden Fleece Hotel is located at 77 Murray Street, Gawler, about 56 km North of Adelaide CBD. This is the main Street of Gawler, so it can be quite hectic, and parking may take a while to locate during peak hours or Weekends.

Venue: This is a nice modern hotel with indoor and outdoor seating options. There is a mixture of tables, booths, and high tables for more informal gatherings. It is a bit hard to critique the seating arrangements and service as we did attend on Mother's Day, which is generally one of the busiest occasions. We ended up on the high tables, which were a bit uncomfortable for the elderly, and there wasn't much room to move our stools when seated.

Selection/Toppings: The menu is basic as far as Schnitzel options go, with just Beef and chicken, a Parmigiana topping, or just gravies and the usual pub sauce options. We tried two options: the Beef Schnitzel Parmigiana and the Chicken Schnitzel with mushroom sauce.

Size: I ordered the Beef Schnitzel Parmigiana, which was an average size. My sister-in-law ordered the Chicken Schnitzel, which was about the same size.

Thickness: The Beef Parmigiana was extremely thick. It was more like a standard Steak that was crumbed. It was easily 15mm thick, which was a bit off-putting. It was tender and well-cooked but not the usual thin meat expected for a Schnitzel.

The Chicken Schnitzel was about the same thickness, but that is more acceptable than a Chicken Breast Schnitzel.

Taste: The Beef Schnitzel was a basic Parmigiana, which consisted of just tomato-based sauce and cheese. (Very Basic). The Chicken Schnitzel had a Mushroom sauce but was very lacking in mushroom more like a gravy with 1 or 2 mushrooms added.

Salad: A Standard Small bowl of side salad with Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, cucumber and the dressing was very tasty.

Price: A basic beef/Chicken schnitzel starts at $24.00, and adding most toppings adds an extra $3.00. The Beef Parmigiana and Chicken and Mushroom were both around $27.00

It's a very nice pub with a great atmosphere. However, it's not a great choice if you're looking for quiet and relaxing. There are plenty of other choices on the menu, and no one at our table was disappointed with the meals. It wasn't the worst Schnitzel I've ever eaten but I think the thickness let it down for the Beef Schnitzel.

Rating at 2 1/2 stars for the Biggest and Best Schnitzel in Town.
