Welcome and What exactly is a ‘Schnitzel’?

Hi, my name is Kylie. I’m here to talk, cook, and taste all things relating to Schnitzels and take you on a journey with my friends and family around Adelaide, South Australia.

Firstly, What is a Schnitzel?

According to the Oxford English Dictionary

A Schnitzel (German: pronounced Shnit+suhl) is a tenderised slice of boneless meat usually coated in breadcrumbs and fried.

It originated in Austria around the 1850s.

As a South Australian, I have fond memories of growing up in the country, where the mark of a good pub was its ability to cook a delicious Schnitzel Parmigiana, or Parmi as we affectionately call it here. The size was also important, as no one wanted a big white plate and a little meal it had to be hanging off the edges.

We won’t discuss yet whether it needs to be Beef, Chicken, Pork, vegetarian or with/ without toppings because we will cover that in future posts.

The plan is to sample as many Schnitzels as my family and friends can handle and give you honest feedback on how they rate on the Biggest & Best Schnitzel in town scale out of 10. We will be looking at Size, Taste, Toppings and Price.

Important topics we will be covering in future posts will be

  1. What’s the best meat/vegetable used in a Schnitzel? Is there such a thing as a vegetarian or vegan Schnitzel.

  2. Is Bigger Better? Is the size of the Schnitzel the most important part of the meal.

  3. Does Salad Matter? Will the salad make or break the meal.

  4. Chips underneath or on the side? Do you care if you chips are underneath your Schnitzel.

I will be using a variety of social media platforms to keep you engaged From Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok so there should be something easily accessible for all types of engagement.

Please check in weekly for updates and feel free to send me any feedback.

Thanks
